A few kilometres from the beach of Vatera is one of the largest waterlands of Greece. It is composed of a rare and unique ecosystem.


The waterland area habitats to an exceptionally diverse species of rare birds. The conditions of thewetland area (such as its temperature, soil composition and shallow waters) has allowed for the growth of many plant and animal organisms, that have attracted the birds. The wetland also houses wild geese, ducks, flamingoes, kingfishers, seagulls and many more.

A large number of bird-watchers gather in the area, especially in spring, when large numbers of birds are attracted to the area.

One of the most beautiful phenomenum of Lesvos, close to the district of Vatera, is the existence of a rare species of squirrel. Thiw small mammal is unique only to Lesvos in all of Greece. It lives in chestnut, almond, acorn and olive trees, and finds nourishment easily. The favourable climate and temperature of the area makes it an ideal habitat for the squirrel.
